Rating system

The Powell River Business and Access Guide is divided into easily identifiable categories, just like the yellow pages. The related businesses are listed within these sections, along with their Accessibility Rating.

The Accessibility Rating is intended to be used as a general reference for facility accessibility, the simplified criteria for rating the facilities is as follows:

L1: Accessible for all people.

L2: Accessible for people using mobility aids, can be hard to access for people using wheelchairs.

L3: Hard to access for people using mobility aids, not wheelchair accessible.

AS: Accessible service by appointment or special arrangement.

 

The accessibility designation for each entry in this guide is indicated after the contact information in each listing.

Listings are either L1, L2 orL3, and each of these three possibilities can have an /AS designation as well.

Level 1

Access for all people

Criteria:

  • Designated handicapped parking
  • Entrance
    • Clear paths / ramp for wheelchair
    • Easy to open doors / automatic / push button
  • Interior
    • No stairs
    • Good lighting
    • Wide aisles
    • Even pathways / slip resistant flooring
    • On level or emergency exit plan for people who use a wheelchair
  • Washrooms: Accessible in all public facilities (malls, restaurants/pubs, recreation facilities etc.)

 

Level 2

Accessible for people using mobility aids, can be hard to access for people using wheelchairs.

Criteria:

  • May not have designated handicapped parking
  • Entrances
    • Clear paths
    • Doors generally easy to open
  • Interior
    • No stairs
    • Wide aisles
    • One level
    • Good lighting
    • May not be wheelchair accessible
  • Washroom
    • May not be accessible for those who use wheelchairs

 

Level 3

Hard to access for people using mobility aids, not wheelchair accessible.

Criteria:

  • Assistance required for those with moderate and severe disabilities

 

AS – Accessible Service

By appointment or special arrangement, this service may be delivered by phone or at your home.

This may include services from Lawyers, Accountants, Real Estate Agents, individual businesses, etc.
